Saturday 28th November – Caught the midday train into London to begin my night, little did I know it would last much, much longer than planned. I had an interview with Bristol electro duo Mesh later on but wanted to get some shopping done first.    My friend and I headed to Harrods as I have a little Christmas tradition, every year I go to the department store and buy an unusual bauble for my black tree, only this year the selection was disappointing and I came out with nothing L. I did enjoy their Wizard of Oz window displays though, in emerald green and ruby red although the Harvey Nicholls displays were spectacular. They had a cabaret theme with sparkles and jewels, feathers, mirrors and butterfly wings, absolutely breathtaking.
After having my fill of twinklies, and boring my boy-friend to death, we head to Islington O2 to meet the band. We were taken through the fire exit and up the back stairs where Mark Hockings and Richard Silverthorn were sat in their dressing room drinking coffee, trying to relax before the gig. I introduced myself and moments later we were deep in conversation and by the end of my questions they were rivaling VNV Nation for the nicest guys in electro rock (read the full interview in Devolution next issue!)
We had some time to kill before the gig so we headed down the road for a few beers at Slim Jims and got into a debate with the barman about Bananaman’s real name…Eric something. Then we couldn’t decide if he ever had a last name or not…then it was time to go.
After a couple of drinks we made a mad dash for the last train…only to miss it by 3 minutes. Bugger. A night of all-night clubbing and wandering the streets stretched before us and as we queued for G.A.Y. we realized we weren’t going to get in. we followed another couple to the Candy Bar, a late night lesbian venue, which we were assured would be open til 6am, but it closed at 3, but after a few double gins we didn’t mind so much. Then it was back to wandering around and sleeping in Liverpool Street station ticket office until our first train home on Sunday where we promptly collapsed. The trains were all kinds of fucked up, with none leaving Liverpool station that day at all. I fell a complaint to the railway peoples coming on. Grrr. A crappy end to a brilliant night.
